Corporate wellness ideas beyond a gym membership

Ask an HR team what their wellness programme is and the commonest honest answer is 'a gym discount'. Ask how many staff use it and the number is usually embarrassing. Wellness spend is not the problem — the format is.

Programmes that work share three features: they come to staff rather than asking staff to come to them; they are social rather than solitary; and they are measured, so HR can defend the budget.

Formats we see working in Kenyan workplaces: in-office movement sessions timed to the lunch hour or just after work; monthly wellness challenges with team-based scoring; quarterly wellness days that combine health checks, talks and activity; and flagship outdoor events — like our lakeside spin and yoga formats — that double as team building.

Nutrition and mental health belong in the mix. A single lunchtime session on stress management or practical healthy eating reaches people a fitness-only programme never will.

The thread through all of it: participation is the metric that matters. A programme is worth its budget when half the company shows up — not when the brochure looks good.
