What is outsourced CSR, and is it right for your company?
Corporate social responsibility fails quietly in most companies. A donation here, a charity walk there — activity without strategy, and nothing written down when the board or a client asks for evidence.
Outsourced CSR puts the whole function with a specialist partner. Instead of hiring a CSR manager and hoping they can also be a project manager, event organiser and report writer, you engage a team that already does all four. The partner writes your strategy and policy, sources and vets community partners, runs the projects and produces the reports.
It suits companies in three situations: those with CSR ambitions but no dedicated staff; those whose CSR spend is real but undocumented; and those facing ESG questions from clients or investors that donations cannot answer.
It is not for everyone. If your CSR is genuinely a full-time internal role — a large mining or manufacturing operation with community relations staff, for example — an internal team with specialist support is the better model. And outsourcing does not outsource accountability: the board still owns the strategy and its results.
The test is simple: can you name, with figures, what your CSR spend achieved last year? If not, the problem is capacity, not intent — and capacity is exactly what an outsourced department provides.
